To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han (Book Review)
I'm doing my third book review! This week I picked up and read a book that was a long-awaited read for me...To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han. I hope you enjoy this review! You can find my Goodreads page here.
My Rating: 2 Stars
My expectations for this book were through the roof. After racing through The Summer I Turned Pretty series, I heard about this book and my first thought was WOW what an amazing plot synopsis. I thought the idea was unique, and frankly, brilliant. For me, the idea was extremely relatable, for personal reasons, obviously, and I couldn't wait until the book was released.
Unfortunately for me, I had to wait a few months to get my hands on the book, but looking back, I'm actually really glad I didn't buy the book. Honestly, I was utterly disappointed. The only thing holding me back from giving this book 1 star was the little gems here and there. For starters, I really didn't like Lara Jean. It actually shocked me that she was in the eleventh grade, because honestly I was thinking more...ninth grade. I feel as if Lara lives in an imaginary world of sorts. Surprisingly it wasn't really her personality that struck me as childish. I couldn't really put my finger on exactly what did make me see her as childish, but there was something there. Evidently, she didn't act her age.
SPOILER: I was completely expecting Lara Jean to end up with Josh, and was pleasantly surprise that she didn't. I seem to really enjoy random plot twists. At the same time, however the relationship between Lara Jean and Peter was so...fake. I mean, okay, obviously it was supposed to be fake at first, but even once they started to develop genuine feelings towards each other, I still felt like it was all a lie.
To be honest, I would recommend this book to people who like sappy, unrealistic, predictable stories. Honestly, this book really, really disappointed me. I apologize to any who enjoyed this book, it's just that personally I really didn't. That being said, I still praise Jenny Han for The Summer I Turned Pretty Series, which I really did enjoy.
Well, at least the cover is pretty.
