If He Had Been With Me by Laura Nowlin (Book Review)
Hi there! Okay....so I've kind of been gone for a long time. No but really, the last time I blogged it was beautiful and sunny out and now it's snowing. Still beautiful, but snowing. Today, I'm doing another book review (shocker) on another book that I just finished. I'm not going to lie, I'd never heard of it before and my friend (my amazing, amazing, friends- that was sarcasm) had already spoiled the ending for me prior to me even picking up the novel. Nonetheless, it was a great book, and I think you'd all love it.
Rating: Five Stars (IKR)
So many emotions are rushing through me right now, for so many different reasons. I put this book down about 30 seconds ago (actually more like 5 minutes ago but let's not be literal) and I feel the need to try and articulate my feelings before they fade away.
The foreshadowing at the beginning of the book was somewhat disappointing for me (at first) because I felt like it had summed up the entire plot synopsis of the book before I'd even turned the first page. I was extremely wrong, of course, but I didn't know it at the time, so it's okay.
In some ways, Autumn reminds me of myself . In others, she reminds me of no one at all. Her friendship with Finn is something that a lot of us have probably pined for (myself included) and after realizing that the novel wasn't simply about their relation(friend)ship, I started to really enjoy the book.
To put the book into a few words...Autumn loves Finn. She always has, but has had trouble recognizing it. The book overviews her entire high school life, from starting the ninth grade, dating Jamie, dealing with her feelings, suffering with seasonal affective disorder, and a couple more things that are kind of biggies in terms of spoilers so I won't share them *yay*.
This book reminds me of Thirteen Reasons Why. We kind of know how the book ends, but we don't know how we got there, and Laura Nowlin does an amazing job of explaining Autumn's story to us. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves deeper, more insightful romance novels. Or really to anyone who just loves a plain old good love story , because underneath it all that's what this really is.
